Successfully stripping your floors

Modern floor stripping method

Why and when should you strip a floor?

Most PVC, thermoplastic or linoleum floors require, when they do not have one upon delivery from the factory, the application of a layer of wax (also called metallization).
This protection, consisting of a wax or emulsion applied manually or in a factory, is not durable. It is subject to the effects of traffic, washing with more or less suitable detergents, the passage of trolleys, moving furniture, etc.
The protection, which is then maintained periodically using a spray method, will at some point have to be completely removed because the deterioration will no longer allow it to be maintained.
This operation of stripping the support is a stripping operation. This operation then allows the support to be re-waxed (or metallized) in order to start again with a new protection.

Stripping a PVC, linoleum, thermoplastic floor

How to proceed for stripping?

The stripping operation is a heavy and delicate operation because it uses materials and products that can damage the supports if used incorrectly.

Professional equipment for stripping your floor:

The equipment used is generally a low-speed single-brush machine and a wet and dry vacuum cleaner or, in the case of large cleared surfaces, a scrubber-dryer .
Stripping is done using black, brown or green discs depending on the fragility of the floor. The darker the disc, the more effective it will be, but the greater the risk of damaging the surface.
Next, you need a stripping product. These products are divided into two main areas:
- Strippers on an alkaline chemical basis with pH close to 10/11 or more
In this case , rinsing with clean water to neutralize the soil will be essential and will often have to be repeated several times. Advantage: the product has a high-performance, rapid action, but there is a risk of degradation/discoloration of the surface.
- “No-rinse” strippers, generally solvent-based, with a lower pH.
In this case, rinsing will still be recommended, but in a much more limited manner. Advantage: safety and ease , but may be less effective than some alkaline strippers.

The Taski Diversey professional floor range

Taski jontec No. 1
Powerful, fast-acting stripper. No rinsing required.
Suitable for all types of water and alkali resistant floors (except wood, cork, painted surfaces and linoleum).
Taski jontec future
Powerful emulsion remover. With rinsing.
For all types of water-resistant coverings (except wood, cork, painted surfaces and linoleum).
Taski jontec linosafe
Specific linoleum stripper.
Do not use on floors sensitive to solvents (e.g. asphalt) and not resistant to water (e.g. unprotected wood).
Taski jontec omnistrip
Dry stripper for Omni method.
Ideal for removing black marks and shoe marks from protected floors. It also allows for deep cleaning of protective film without closing the area to traffic.
Taski jontec solve
Solvent-based stripper for wood and cork coverings.
Do not use on solvent-sensitive floors such as rubber or asphalt.

Steps for stripping plastic floors

Stripping PVC, thermoplastic and linoleum floors is a multi-step process, carried out by cleaning professionals equipped with professional products and suitable cleaning equipment such as single-brush or scrubber dryers.
Floor preparation and stripping: The first step is to prepare the surface by removing furniture, clearing the surfaces as much as possible and sweeping using a damp sweeping mop with impregnated gauze or a microfiber mop and a neutral cleaner, then possibly carefully vacuuming the floor. Then, you will need to use a low-speed single-brush machine or a floor scrubber for large surfaces equipped with a black /brown disc or green if the surface is fragile to thoroughly strip your PVC, lino or thermoplastic floor, removing layers of dirt, old layers of wax and accumulated residue.
Floor rinsing and chemical neutralization: Once stripping is complete, it is essential to thoroughly rinse the floor to remove any residue from the stripping solution. This floor neutralization step ensures that the floor is perfectly neutral with a pH close to 7 before applying protection via an acrylic emulsion (wax or metallization). This phase can be done using a wet vacuum cleaner but also a scrubber-dryer as long as the size of the room allows it. This neutralization phase can be greatly reduced with the use of so-called "no-rinse" stripper which still requires rinsing but where the return to neutrality of the floor will be accelerated. In the case of this type of stripper it would be more honest to speak of a stripper with limited rinsing... The pH can be checked with pH paper strips or "litmus" paper.

The two forms of stripping: did you know?

Wet stripping: also called reconditioning for very dirty coatings.
Application of the stripping product in the form of a stripper + water solution with a flat scrubbing mop, with an action time to be respected then passage of the single-brush machine. The application of the stripping solution can also be done with a scrubber-drier equipped with a black, brown, blue or green disc depending on the fragility of the floor. This is of course possible if the size and bulk of the surface lends itself to it. This will be a very significant time saving, particularly at the final level of collecting the stripping solution. In this specific case the scrubber-drier will work in two stages. First application and stripping without suction (brush raised) then passage for collecting and rinsing taking advantage of the suction power of the scrubber-drier.
Of course, the suction or evacuation of stripping residues and drying of the surface can be done with a water vacuum cleaner, a scrubber-dryer or, as a last resort, a floor squeegee.

Dry stripping (spray) : allows the total or partial removal of floor protection by applying the principle of the spray method.
The product is sprayed onto the floor and the single-brush machine is used with a suitable disc (brown color).
This stripping is suitable for floors that are particularly sensitive to water and do not have too much wax build-up. For treating small areas.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stripping

My floor discolors when stripped?

In this case, it is imperative to change the product and refer to the manufacturer's technical data sheet for the floor, which sometimes recommends solvent-based formulations rather than alkaline ones, for example. Discoloration can also be linked to the age of the floor, and in this case, a lower dilution will be required to promote mechanical action.

How do I check that my rinsing is correct?

A simple method involves applying a little clean water to different points on your surface and placing a pH paper strip or litmus paper on it. This type of strip used to check the pH of swimming pools is readily available on the market. If your pH strip indicates a pH that is still alkaline, it will be imperative to repeat the rinsing operation, otherwise the wax will not hold well in the next phase.

I applied my wax but it turned to dust: flour?

Probably if the quality of the product is not at stake, that your rinsing phase was not correctly carried out. In this case the residue of decanter impregnated in the soil comes out and attacks the emulsion.

What color disc should I use to strip my floor?

Generally, the standard black stripping disc color is preferred, but a preliminary test should be carried out. Alternatives can be brown, blue, or green for very fragile floors.
Conversely, for heavier stripping, Hi Pro stripping discs allow for deeper action.
