Hand drying in public spaces
The hand dryer is an alternative to the solution paper hand towels .
The decision must be made based on economic criteria, hygiene and the expectations of customers and users, but also on eliminating the need for a bin for waste collection.
The choice is made primarily for economic reasons and the type of traffic in the restrooms.
Putting a disposable product solution at a motorway service station, an airport, a train station ... places where traffic is very heavy , would quickly turn into a disaster in terms of consumption!
This is true even though there are hand towel dispenser solutions attached to a soap dispenser allowing optimal control of distribution and consumption.
Installing a hand dryer with pulsed air (Dyson type) or hot air is therefore the most suitable solution in this case.
A suitable solution both in terms of economics and management of restocking disposable products.
Where are hand dryers manufactured: the different brands?
Virtually all hand dryers, like professional hair dryers, are manufactured in Asia or Taiwan .
Some manufacturers, such as JVD, Vama, and Dyson, assemble their models with vandal-resistant ABS covers in white, black, or other colors, molded in France or Europe . In most cases, the electric motors , as well as the electronic boards and HEPA filters, come from Asian manufacturers .
And even for these manufacturers, even if the hood design may be "exclusive" (or not), several models in their range are entirely manufactured in Asia .
Some brands like Rossignol do not manufacture any of their devices and this is considered a related range nevertheless with Rossignol's quality control guarantees.
You will therefore find great similarities in terms of design, conception and features between the brands.
What are the savings and what is the daily cost?
Statistics regarding disposable paper indicate an average use of 7 sheets per day per person. This information allows you to calculate based on the number of people who frequent your establishment and to check if you are using too much.
However, this data can vary depending on the quality of the paper (number of plies, size, weight, etc.).
The comparison with energy consumption is clearly to the disadvantage of disposable products.
The conclusion is therefore clear: if your calculation boils down to making maximum savings, disposable items are more expensive.
Comparative hygiene between hand dryers and paper towels
Regarding hygiene and bacteriology , although electric hand dryers with forced air represent a slight improvement over their hot air counterparts, the use of single-use paper towels remains the gold standard if impeccable hygiene is your priority . A comparative study conducted by two scientists at the School of Biosciences, University of Westminster, London, revealed that single-use paper towels were the most hygienic drying method, far surpassing blown or propelled air dryers.
Conversely, the absence of a bin due to the use of disposable items reduces the risk of proliferation.
How do I install a hand dryer?
The installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician to avoid any mishandling. Wall mounting must be done using sufficiently strong wall plugs suitable for the wall type.
The recommendations for installation are as follows:
Installation height: The installation must be carried out in accordance with the NFC 15-100 standard.
Specific to early childhood: Considering article R21 dealing with premises concerned by early childhood, hand dryers must meet the following conditions:
• The temperature at the air outlet of the appliance should not exceed 60°C under normal operating conditions (opt for a power rating below 1500W).
• In the case of an IP2X classification, then the device must be installed so that its lowest part of the cover is at a height of at least 1.2m from the ground.
• If it has an IP3X (or higher) rating, then it can be installed at a height of less than 1.2m from the ground.
Hand dryer insulation class
You will always find an insulation class represented by a pictogram.
Class I: Must be connected to earth.
Class II: These have double electrical insulation and do not require an earth connection. Unlike Class I, they can be installed in bathrooms.
