Since the AGEC law came into effect in 2020, single-use plastic cutlery has been progressively banned in on-site catering . Reusable plastic cutlery is emerging as the preferred solution: it combines durability, hygiene, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory compliance. Voussert selects products tested to withstand hundreds of wash cycles in professional dishwashers, while maintaining their rigidity and sharpness (for knives).
Polypropylene or SAN: which material to choose?
Polypropylene (PP) is the standard material for reusable cutlery designed for heavy use: highly impact-resistant, virtually unbreakable, and dishwasher-safe up to 70°C, it is also microwave-safe. Its flexibility allows it to absorb stress without breaking. SAN (styrene-acrylonitrile), on the other hand, offers rigidity and transparency similar to glass, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing presentation when serving dishes. It is preferred for premium events and high-end restaurants. Both materials are BPA-free and comply with European Regulation (EU) 10/2011 on food contact.
Technical specifications per part
The reusable plastic knife typically measures between 16 and 18 cm and features a slightly serrated blade that ensures efficient cutting over hundreds of uses. The fork measures between 16 and 17 cm with four thick, calibrated tines to prevent breakage. The large spoon (17-18 cm) has a rigid handle and a deep bowl. The small spoon (13-14 cm) is designed for coffee, desserts, and yogurt. All pieces are ergonomically designed and stackable for storage and organization in communal serving containers.
Washing cycle and lifespan
Reusable professional plastic cutlery can withstand a standard industrial dishwasher cycle (70-80°C, alkaline detergent) and retains its shape and mechanical properties for 300 to 600 wash cycles, depending on usage and material quality. This represents an average lifespan of 1 to 3 years under intensive daily use (school cafeteria, company restaurant). Under moderate use (events, catering), the lifespan can reach 4 to 5 years. Store them dry, with the handles facing upwards in a dispenser, to prolong their lifespan.
Reusable plastic cutlery and the AGEC law
The AGEC law (Anti-Waste and Circular Economy) has progressively phased out disposable plastic cutlery for on-site dining, starting January 1, 2023, for all establishments serving more than 20 meals simultaneously. Reusable plastic cutlery, however, remains perfectly legal, provided it is washed and reused on-site. It currently represents the most economical and environmentally friendly solution for professionals, compared to alternatives such as wooden cutlery, biodegradable PLA, and stainless steel, which requires careful management.
Which sectors of activity are affected?
Catering services (school cafeterias, company restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes) are the primary users of reusable plastic cutlery: volume, hygiene, durability, and cost-effectiveness are key advantages. Events (caterers, weddings, seminars, cocktail parties) find a discreet and elegant solution, especially in SAN crystal. Outdoor accommodation (campsites, mobile homes, holiday residences) choose them for their impact resistance and compatibility with simplified washing processes. Nurseries and daycare centers appreciate the safety of plastic cutlery (no breakage) combined with BPA-free compliance for young children.
