The EN 1822 standard classifies filters into three families and eight classes: EPA (E10 to E12, 85% to 99.5%), HEPA (H13 to H14, 99.95% to 99.995%), and ULPA (U15 to U17, up to 99.9999%). Measurement is taken at 0.3 µm, the smallest size to detect. The higher the number, the finer the filtration, but also the greater the air resistance and the harder the motor has to work.
A complete professional vacuum cleaner typically features three stages of filtration: the bag (first barrier, trapping 99% of dust), the cartridge motor filter (protects the motor from fine particles), and the HEPA absolute filter at the exhaust (purifies the expelled air). All three must be monitored and replaced together to guarantee overall performance.
A HEPA filter should be changed every 12 months with daily use, or sooner if the vacuum cleaner's suction power increases abnormally (saturation). A cartridge motor filter should be cleaned or replaced every 3 to 6 months. A saturated filter reduces airflow and puts extra strain on the motor; if it remains unchanged for more than 12 months, a measurable loss of suction will be observed.
