Using wood for an outdoor trash can
Communities, campsites, and hotel establishments must offer outdoor waste collection solutions. The range and breadth of products and manufacturers available in this field is vast. Voussert has been offering a wide range of outdoor bins for over 45 years, through products it has mastered in manufacturing and partnerships with major manufacturers, including a specific range of wooden outdoor bins .
Implementation and installation in public spaces
When organizing waste collection in public areas of cities, businesses, campsites, etc., choosing a practical collector, resistant to bad weather over time but also designed to fit into the environment must be done with a minimum of knowledge of materials, manufacturers and guarantees. Among the products used to develop outdoor spaces, outdoor bins are essential in maintaining the cleanliness and attractiveness of places . However, beyond their practical function, these pieces of equipment can become real aesthetic assets for the environment . It is with this in mind that they have established themselves as a solution of choice for communities concerned about the visual appearance of their public spaces while favoring durable and ecological materials such as wood. The installation of these bins is done simply by fixing the ground structure with suitable dowels and screws or by placing them directly on the ground given their weight.

Materials used, labels and certifications
There are different materials used in the manufacture of an outdoor trash can.
For example, all Rossignol brand "wood" products comply with the ministerial directive on the promotion of sustainable forest management (decrees of April 5, 2005). To date, two labels exist: PEFC (Pan European Forest Certification) and FCS (Forest Stewardship Council).
What is the FSC label?
Several manufacturers offer lines made from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood. This label guarantees that the wood used comes from responsibly managed forests, thus reinforcing the eco-responsible dimension of this equipment.
Stained exotic wood : Natural characteristics guarantee resistance to rot, insects, and fungi. Staining is a treatment that helps maintain its glossy appearance and longevity. Renewing the stain every 2 to 3 years is recommended, depending on use.
Powder-coated steel
- Epoxy / polyester powder: this coating is applied for interior and hygiene products because it has very good resistance to chemicals and corrosion.
- Polyester powder: after being powdered, the product is put in the oven to allow the
polymerization (thickness: 60 microns). This coating is applied for outdoor products because
It has very good resistance to corrosion, shock and light (UV).
Galvanization
- Electro-galvanizing: treatment of steel against oxidation by depositing a zinc film using electrolytic treatment.
- Hot-dip galvanizing: treatment of steel against corrosion by hot immersion in a bath of molten zinc. This treatment provides excellent corrosion resistance.
The advantages of using wood
A natural and elegant aesthetic
Wood is a noble material that blends harmoniously into natural, urban, or rural landscapes. Whether in a park, a city path, or a public garden, they bring a warm and authentic touch that enhances the environment. Available in a variety of species, shapes, and designs, these pieces allow you to personalize street furniture while maintaining a consistent and elegant aesthetic.
Remarkable durability
Contrary to popular belief, the wood used for manufacturing benefits from a specific treatment that makes it extremely resistant to bad weather, humidity and insect attacks. This equipment can therefore have an exceptional lifespan , up to 10 years in some cases , without requiring too frequent maintenance. This quality makes it a wise investment for communities concerned about the longevity of their street furniture.
Simplified maintenance
Compared to their metal or plastic counterparts, they stand out for their ease of maintenance. Their smooth surface and neat finish allow for quick and efficient cleaning, thus limiting long-term maintenance costs. Furthermore, wood lends itself easily to customization through engraving or painting, offering the opportunity to strengthen their visual identity.
Reduced environmental impact
Beyond their aesthetic and practical qualities, this bin offers an undeniable environmental advantage. Made from renewable materials, they can be easily recycled or composted at the end of their life, helping to reduce your company's ecological footprint. Furthermore, since wood is a biodegradable material, its use is part of a sustainable development approach.
Features: capacity - design
When it comes to selecting the right outdoor wooden bin for your needs, you need to list several points of comparison between each characteristic:
The capacity of the bin:
The first step is to assess the amount of waste to be collected in the public space in question. Wooden bins are available in a wide range of capacities, from 30 to over 110 liters, allowing you to meet the specific needs of each site.
Design and materials
The choice of design and materials is of paramount importance for the harmonious integration of the equipment into the environment. Communities can opt for traditional models in solid wood, contemporary versions in exotic wood or even variants combining wood with other materials such as steel or metal. Rossignol offers ranges of imitation wood bins whose slats are made from recycled food cartons . This avoids depleting the natural resource and prioritizes the product's life cycle.
French customization
Personalization: Rossignol's expertise. Some manufacturers, such as Rossignol, which manufactures in France, offer the option of personalizing wooden trash cans with the logo or name of the community. This option strengthens the visual identity of public spaces and makes these facilities easier for users to recognize.
The price of the product
Finally, the budget allocated by the community is an essential constraint in choosing a bin. Although generally more expensive than plastic or metal models, these devices represent a sustainable investment thanks to their excellent durability.
The different shapes, with or without ashtray
Round shapes: Round wooden bins are a classic and timeless choice for public spaces. Their cylindrical shape blends harmoniously into a wide variety of environments, from city parks to village squares. Available with or without lids, these models offer a capacity ranging from 50 to 100 liters. Our reference 7996J is a great classic at an unbeatable price, integrating an inner bucket and a fully galvanized structure.
Square shapes: For a more contemporary look, square wooden bins are an elegant alternative. Their sleek design and straight lines blend perfectly with modern urban spaces. With a capacity of 50 to 100 liters, these bins can also be fitted with a lid for better waste protection. You'll find our exclusive ECL10, ECL11, and ECL21 bins, with or without an ashtray, at prices negotiated directly with our manufacturers. They feature removable inner bins.
Framed structure: To enhance the visual integration of wooden outdoor bins into the environment, some models are equipped with a wooden slatted frame. This accessory adds a natural and warm touch while discreetly concealing the bin bag. The capacity of these units generally varies between 80 and 100 liters.
For playful play areas: For public spaces intended for children, such as playgrounds or schools, playful wooden bins are a particularly attractive option. Decorated with colorful and fun designs, these pieces of equipment encourage youngsters to adopt good sorting and cleanliness practices while brightening up the environment.
Recycling-oriented: In an effort to promote recycling, many communities are opting for outdoor wooden bins specifically designed for recycling. Featuring multiple compartments, these models allow for differentiated waste collection while blending harmoniously into the urban or rural landscape.
As selective sorting is now almost mandatory signage in the city, you have several options.
Either the item is delivered with a colored cover (yellow, black, etc.), or signage on the walls, or you can choose to affix your communication (which we offer in the form of a plate to fix or self-adhesive).
Maintenance and upkeep of your trash can
Although wood is a naturally durable material, regular maintenance is necessary to preserve the beauty and longevity of outdoor trash cans. Here are some tips for maintaining them:
Periodic Cleaning: Regular cleaning with a mild detergent and a soft brush will remove dirt, mildew, and stains that may form on the wood. It is recommended to perform this cleaning at least once a season.
Weather Protection: To prevent discoloration and deterioration of the wood , it is essential to regularly apply a protective layer in the form of oils or varnishes specially designed for outdoor equipment. This step is particularly important before the winter periods.
Avoid waterlogging: To prevent wood rot, ensure that water does not pool around outdoor trash cans. Proper drainage and regular removal of leaves and debris are therefore essential.
Cleaning Precautions: When cleaning, avoid using metal tools that could scratch the wood surface. Instead, use soft brushes or sponges to preserve the integrity of the material.
By following these good maintenance practices, communities will be able to fully enjoy the benefits of outdoor wooden bins for many years.
