Installation of outdoor trash cans in public spaces
Waste collection in public spaces is regulated with an obligation of installation and maintenance for communities but also businesses, companies, campsites, hotels, shopping centers... and in general any activity involving public attendance.
For over 45 years, Voussert has been offering a wide range of outdoor bins made of metal, wood, concrete, etc., with different capacities and suitable for selective sorting.
The outdoor trash can is an essential element for equipping the collective environment , just like the ashtray, public benches, bicycle rack and many others.
What is the obligation for installation and maintenance?
The installation of outdoor bins must meet several technical and practical criteria:
Accessibility for all users and the public, including people with reduced mobility (PRM).
Sufficient visibility to precisely identify waste disposal without harming urban aesthetics or the nearby neighborhood (residential area).
Optimal spacing (generally between 35 and 100 meters depending on traffic density)
Easy accessibility with proximity to areas of high public traffic, particularly in train stations, airports, shopping centers, but also parks and gardens, beaches, etc.
The distribution of equipment must be planned so that the distance between any point in the public space and the nearest container does not exceed a reasonable distance, generally set at 200 meters in dense urban areas.
Regarding maintenance, the frequency of collection is the key to keeping public spaces clean! Cleaning the bin should be done with suitable products that are not aggressive to the surface. More extensive maintenance should be done on equipment installed by the sea or in areas sensitive to salt air, which presents a more aggressive environment for products.
What are the duties of users and sanctions?
If you are a community or a public establishment, providing sufficient and suitable waste disposal allows you to fulfill your obligations. Indeed, users of public roads or private spaces belonging to you but intended for public use are subject to obligations with potential penalties. Therefore, if they do not have a solution for treating this waste, it will harm your establishment's image.
The user's obligations are to comply with sorting instructions (hence the importance of implementing them), and to strictly prohibit dumping waste outside of designated containers. As a reminder, fines for dumping waste on public roads range from €135 to €35 for failure to comply with selective sorting.
The leading brands and manufacturers of outdoor trash cans?
The range of street furniture, particularly trash cans for public spaces, is very wide and of varying quality. The leading manufacturer in France is naturally Rossignol , which designs, manufactures, and customizes products, with an innovative acceleration in selective sorting with the CUBATRI line in recent years. Rubbermaid is also a very active player in the field of waste collection, both indoors and outdoors, with the particularity of offering polyethylene products, whereas Rossignol has fundamentally and historically worked with steel in all its forms. References like its tulip-shaped trash can range are top sellers for the brand.
Our partnership with these brands allows us to offer you a wide range of community bins in stock at some of the lowest prices on the market. In addition to developing and respecting the green spaces in your town or community, you'll also be able to benefit from the quality of our brands at unbeatable prices!
Rossignol outdoor bins, the choice for durability and made in France
When purchasing outdoor bins for your community , the sustainability of the product and its integration into a more civic-minded approach is increasingly important. Recycling bins, durable, lockable and easy-to-clean bins for maintenance workers or municipal agents can be found in our complete range of bin containers.
Rossignol offers a selection of outdoor bins for collecting waste in your green spaces. They fit perfectly into a green environment and contribute to its enhancement by making it clean and welcoming. Whether wall-mounted , free-standing or fixed, made of plastic, steel or wood , these products are elegant, discreet and robust. Their locations must be judicious: neither too visible nor too hidden to ensure their proper use.
Outdoor community bin with or without ashtray?
With the evolving legislation regarding smoking-free areas, public spaces have had to be equipped with outdoor ashtrays. Several models of these ashtrays also serve as trash cans. For public spaces like parks and gardens, squares, etc., choosing an outdoor trash can with an integrated ashtray can be a wise choice to limit the number of devices and thus implement a dual function.
Several of the outdoor trash cans offered by Voussert offer the option of an ashtray. A site audit should first be conducted based on the number of visitors and the benefits of providing this type of service. In some locations, this may be unnecessary or even inconsistent with the intended purpose of the space, such as a children's playground.
Outdoor trash can and selective sorting
As part of our daily approach to selective sorting and respect for the environment , we offer you complete solutions for waste collection . High-quality, designer, easy-to-install and empty bins, containers and bin bag holders are also available. These outdoor bins are generally used in areas with a green space with a picnic table, for example, in parks or other public spaces in cities. A product of everyday life, an outdoor bin is designed to better collect , sort and store waste before recycling and thus improve the quality of life of users. These bins are increasingly becoming a real decorative element of the urban environment . In addition, they generally have a large volume, to accommodate a large amount of rubbish.
Fixing and installing the trash can
The method of securing the trash can is an important element in public spaces for many reasons. The first is a safety argument to prevent the trash can from becoming a projectile or a tool during demonstrations or events with large crowds.
You will find bins that can be placed on the floor and which, due to their sheer weight, will not present any risk of movement, such as those made of concrete.
Materials used for outdoor trash cans
A trash can that will be placed outdoors must be resistant to weather conditions over time and to degradation due to foot traffic. In this regard, this means that the material used is the key to checking before the design, capacity, etc.
Voussert has compiled a list of materials you'll find in the manufacturing of outdoor trash cans. This list provides a glossary for sometimes highly technical product descriptions.
Synthesis of materials and steel qualities
- Acrylo-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) : Plastic resistant to cleaning products: smooth and shiny texture
- Aluminum: Non-ferrous metal, lightweight and corrosion resistant.
- cast aluminum: Product molded from cast aluminum. This process provides very high resistance to shocks and corrosion.
- Stainless steel: Steel quality particularly resistant to oxidation.
- AISI 304 (18/10) stainless steel is a so-called food-grade steel. 18/10 refers to a steel containing 18% chromium and 10% nickel.
- Inox f17 is a ferrous steel that requires regular maintenance.
- Brass: Alloy of copper and zinc; slightly oxidizable material.
- Polyethylene – PP: Rigid plastic, particularly resistant to outdoor and humid conditions.
- Polyethylene – PE: A rigid plastic with excellent resistance to chemicals and impact. A type of plastic obtained by polymerizing ethylene. Polyethylene, or polyethene (generic acronym PE), is one of the simplest and least expensive polymers. It belongs to the polyolefin family.
- High-impact polystyrene: Basic polystyrene, called crystal PS, is a hard, brittle material that can be transparent or colored. Its mechanical and thermal properties can be modified by adding plasticizers or butadiene (rubber) to make it a so-called high-impact polystyrene.
- PVC: Polymer resin resistant to aging, waterproof and easy to maintain.
- Textile: Machine washable at 40°C and ironable.
- Thermoset: Thermosetting resin, i.e. a polymer (a plastic material) that hardens under the action of energy. The molecules that make it up (monomers) bind together to make it more rigid.
- Zamak: Non-ferrous metal, a zinc alloy containing aluminum, magnesium, and sometimes copper. Corrosion-resistant material.
Outdoor trash can wood case
All Rossignol "wood" products comply with the ministerial directive on the promotion of sustainable forest management (decrees of April 5, 2005). Currently, two labels exist: PEFC (Pan European Forest Certification) and FCS (Forest Stewardship Council). The ZENO Bois, EDEN, and Arkea ranges use FSC wood.
Rossignol and many manufacturers have understood the importance of preserving resources and using more and more recycled materials.
Rossignol's Etikk outdoor bins are made from recycled material slats made from food cartons.
Voussert offers an eco-friendly alternative for several products by manufacturing its products using so-called "composite" slats, such as the ECL11, ECL10, ECL21, and 7996J ranges, which are found in garden furniture. These slats are made from assembled wood residues compacted with resin. The advantage is the preservation of natural resources, durability, and much less maintenance.
Outdoor trash can and surface treatment
Beyond the material used, there are surface treatments which guarantee durability over time.
- Stained exotic wood: The natural characteristics of exotic wood guarantee resistance to rot, insects and fungi. Staining is a treatment that helps maintain the wood's glossy appearance and longevity. Renewing the stain every 2 to 3 years is recommended depending on use.
- “CTBB+” certified softwood: Autoclave treatment makes the wood highly resistant to rot, insects and fungi and provides a ten-year warranty. It gives the wood a slightly greenish color that fades over time and requires no maintenance.
- Brushing: Mechanical surface treatment applied to the metal to give it a brushed rather than shiny appearance.
- Galvanization , there are two types of galvanization:
- Electro-galvanizing: protection of steel against oxidation by depositing a zinc film using electrolytic treatment.
- Hot-dip galvanizing: protection of steel against corrosion by hot immersion in a
molten zinc bath. This treatment provides excellent corrosion resistance.
- Powder, there are two types of powder treatment:
- Epoxy / polyester powder: this coating is applied for interior and hygiene products because it has very good resistance to chemicals and corrosion.
- Polyester powder: after being powdered, the product is put in the oven to allow the
polymerization (thickness: 60 microns). This coating is applied to outdoor products because it has very good resistance to corrosion, impact and light (UV).
- RAL: Color chart of numbered standard shades, the composition of which is known to all
paint and powder manufacturers.
- BonderiteNT or Cataphoresis coating: Process enabling very high anti-corrosion protection to be obtained on steel.
- Thermoplastic coating: A thermoplastic material refers to a material that softens (sometimes a clear melting is observed) repeatedly when heated above a certain temperature, but which, below this temperature, becomes hard again. Such a material will therefore always reversibly retain its initial thermoplasticity. This quality makes the thermoplastic material potentially recyclable (after crushing).
- Rilsan: Rilsan® coating is a recognized surface protection, due to its excellent chemical and mechanical properties.
- Yellow zinc plating: Zinc plating is a general term for any surface treatment that results in the formation of a metallic zinc coating. The objective is to prevent the degradation of the coated metal by corrosion.
