Installation of outdoor bins in public spaces
Waste collection in public spaces is regulated with an obligation for local authorities, but also for businesses, companies, campsites, hotels, shopping centers... and generally any activity involving public access.
Voussert has been offering a wide range of outdoor bins for over 45 years, made of metal, wood, concrete, etc., in various capacities and with the option to integrate selective sorting.
The outdoor bin is an essential element for equipping the collective environment , just like the ashtray, public benches, bicycle rack and many others.
What are the installation and maintenance requirements?
The placement of outdoor bins, which can mostly bewheeled bin containers, must comply with several technical and practical criteria:
Accessibility for all users and the public, including people with reduced mobility (PRM).
Sufficient visibility to precisely identify the waste disposal without harming the urban aesthetics or the immediate neighborhood (residential area).
Optimal spacing (generally between 35 and 100 meters depending on the density of visitors)

Easy accessibility with proximity to areas of high public traffic, particularly in train stations, airports, shopping centers, but also parks and gardens, beachfront...
The distribution of equipment must be planned so that the distance between any point in the public space and the nearest container does not exceed a reasonable distance, usually set at 200 meters in dense urban areas.
Regarding maintenance, the frequency of collection is key to the cleanliness of public spaces! Bins must be cleaned with appropriate, non-aggressive products. More frequent maintenance is required for bins located near the sea or in areas with high salt air, which present a more aggressive environment for cleaning products.
What are the duties and sanctions for users?
If you are a local authority or an establishment open to the public, providing a sufficient and appropriate supply of rubbish bins allows you to fulfill your obligations. Indeed, users of public roads or private spaces belonging to you but intended for public use are subject to regulations and potential penalties. Therefore, if they have no way to dispose of their waste, it will damage the image of your establishment.
Users are obligated to follow the sorting instructions (hence the importance of implementing this system), and it is strictly forbidden to leave waste outside of designated containers. As a reminder, fines for littering on public roads range from €135 to €35 for non-compliance with recycling regulations.
What are the leading brands and manufacturers of outdoor bins?
The range of street furniture, particularly litter bins for public spaces, is very broad and varies in quality. The leading manufacturer in France is undoubtedly Rossignol , which designs, manufactures, and customizes its products, with a strong focus on innovative recycling solutions through its CUBATRI line in recent years. Rubbermaid is also a major player in the waste collection sector, both indoors and outdoors, offering polyethylene products, whereas Rossignol has a long and long history of working with steel in all its forms. Products like its tulip-shaped litter bin range are among the brand's bestsellers.
Our partnership with these brands allows us to offer you one of the largest selections of public waste bins in stock at some of the lowest prices on the market. In addition to improving and respecting the green spaces of your town or community, you will also benefit from the quality of our brands at unbeatable prices!

When purchasing outdoor waste bins for your community , product durability and its integration into a more civic-minded approach are increasingly important considerations. Recycling bins, sturdy bins, lockable bins, and bins that are easy for maintenance staff or municipal workers to clean can all be found in our complete range of waste containers.
Rossignol offers a selection of outdoor bins for collecting waste in your green spaces. They blend seamlessly into a verdant environment and enhance its appearance, keeping it clean and inviting. Whether wall-mounted , freestanding, or fixed, and made of plastic, steel, or wood , these products are elegant, discreet, and robust. Their placement should be carefully considered: neither too visible nor too hidden to ensure proper use.
Outdoor communal bin with or without an ashtray?
With changes in legislation regarding smoking bans, public spaces have had to be equipped with outdoor ashtrays. Several models of these ashtrays also function as ashtray bins. For shared spaces such as parks and gardens, squares, etc., choosing an outdoor bin with an integrated ashtray can be a wise decision to reduce the number of bins and thus implement a dual function.
Several of the outdoor bins offered by Voussert include an ashtray option. A site assessment should be conducted beforehand, taking into account the level of traffic and the necessity of providing this type of service. In some locations, it may prove unnecessary or even inconsistent with the intended use of the space, such as a children's playground.
Outdoor bin and recycling
As part of our daily commitment to recycling and environmental protection , we offer comprehensive waste collection solutions . High-quality, stylish bins, containers, and bag holders that are easy to install and empty are also available. These outdoor bins are typically used in areas with green spaces, such as picnic tables, in parks, or other public spaces in cities. An everyday essential, an outdoor bin is designed to better collect , sort, and store waste before recycling , thus improving the quality of life for users. These bins are increasingly becoming a decorative element in the urban environment . Furthermore, they generally have a large capacity to hold a significant amount of waste.
Fixing and installing the bin
The way in which a bin is secured is an important element in public spaces for many reasons. The first is a safety concern, preventing the bin from becoming a projectile or tool during demonstrations or large gatherings.
You will find bins that can be placed on the ground and which, by their simple weight, will not present any risk of moving, such as those made of concrete.
The materials used for outdoor bins
An outdoor bin must be weather-resistant and durable, resisting wear and tear from repeated use. In this context, the material it's made of is the most important factor to consider before the design, capacity, etc.
Voussert has compiled a list of materials you'll find in the manufacture of outdoor bins. This list helps to clarify the sometimes highly technical descriptions of these products.
Synthesis of materials and steel qualities
- Acrylic Butadiene Styrene (ABS) : Plastic resistant to cleaning products: smooth and glossy texture
- Aluminium: Non-ferrous metal, lightweight and corrosion resistant.
- Cast aluminum: Product molded from cast aluminum. This process allows for very high resistance to impact and corrosion.
- Stainless steel: A quality of steel that is particularly resistant to oxidation.
- AISI 304 (18/10) stainless steel is considered food-grade. 18/10 refers to a steel containing 18% chromium and 10% nickel.
- Inox f17 is a ferretic steel that requires regular maintenance.
- Brass: Alloy of copper and zinc; material that is slightly oxidizable.
- Polyethylene – PP: Rigid plastic, particularly resistant to outdoor and humid conditions of use.
- Polyethylene (PE): A rigid plastic with excellent resistance to chemicals and impacts. It is a type of plastic obtained by polymerizing ethylene. Polyethylene, or polyethylene (generic abbreviation PE), is one of the simplest and least expensive polymers. It belongs to the polyolefin family.
- High-impact polystyrene: Basic polystyrene, called crystal polystyrene, is a hard and brittle material that can be transparent or colored. Its mechanical and thermal properties can be modified by adding plasticizers or butadiene (rubber) to create what is known as high-impact polystyrene.
- PVC: Age-resistant, waterproof and easy-to-maintain polymer resin.
- Textile: Machine washable at 40°C and ironable.
- Thermoset: Thermosetting resin, that is to say a polymer (a plastic material) that hardens under the action of energy. The constituent molecules (monomers) bond to each other to make it more rigid.
- Zamak: Non-ferrous metal, zinc alloy containing aluminum, magnesium and sometimes copper. Corrosion-resistant material.
Case of the wood from the outdoor bin
All Rossignol wood products comply with the ministerial directive on promoting sustainable forest management (decrees of April 5, 2005). Currently, two labels exist: PEFC (Pan European Forest Certification) and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). The ZENO Bois, EDEN, and Arkea ranges use FSC-certified wood.
Rossignol and many other manufacturers have understood the importance of preserving resources and using more and more recycled materials.
Rossignol's Etikk outdoor bins are made from slats of recycled material based on food cartons.
Voussert offers an eco-responsible alternative for several of its products by manufacturing them using composite slats, such as the ECL11, ECL10, ECL21, and 7996J ranges, which are commonly found in garden furniture. These slats are made from wood scraps bonded and compacted with resin. The benefits include the preservation of natural resources and significantly reduced durability and maintenance.
Outdoor waste bin and surface treatment
Beyond the material used, there are surface treatments that guarantee durability over time.
- Stained exotic wood: The natural characteristics of exotic wood guarantee resistance to rot, insects, and fungi. Staining is a treatment that preserves the wood's glossy appearance and longevity. Reapplying the stain every 2 to 3 years is recommended, depending on usage.
- Certified "CTBB+" softwood: Autoclave treatment makes the wood highly resistant to rot, insects, and fungi, and provides a ten-year guarantee. It gives the wood a slightly greenish tint that fades over time and requires no maintenance.
- Brushing: Mechanical surface treatment applied to metal to give it a brushed rather than shiny appearance.
- Galvanization , there are two types of galvanization:
- Electro-galvanizing: protection of steel against oxidation by depositing a zinc film through electrolytic treatment.
- Hot-dip galvanizing: protection of steel against corrosion by hot immersion in a
Molten zinc bath. This treatment provides excellent corrosion resistance.
- Powder, there are two types of powder treatment:
- Epoxy/polyester powder: this coating is applied to interior and hygiene products because it has very good resistance to chemicals and corrosion.
- Polyester powder: after being powdered, the product is baked to allow the
Polymerization (thickness: 60 microns). This coating is applied to outdoor products because it has very good resistance to corrosion, impact and light (UV).
- RAL: A color chart of numbered standard colors, the composition of which is known to all
paint and powder manufacturers.
- BonderiteNT or Cataphoresis coating: Process allowing very high anti-corrosion protection on steel.
- Thermoplastic coating: A thermoplastic material is a material that softens (sometimes even melts completely) repeatedly when heated above a certain temperature, but hardens again below that temperature. Such a material will therefore always reversibly retain its initial thermoplasticity. This property makes the thermoplastic material potentially recyclable (after grinding).
- Rilsan: The Rilsan® coating is a recognized surface protection, due to its excellent chemical and mechanical properties.
- Yellow zinc plating: Zinc plating is a general term for any surface treatment that results in the formation of a metallic zinc coating. The aim is to prevent the coated metal from degrading due to corrosion.
