Difference between pool chemicals chlorine or chlorine treatment

Professional swimming pool chlorine

Summary

Swimming pool water is a prime environment for the growth of microorganisms that can pose a risk to swimming. Furthermore, as they multiply, they will make the water cloudy and the walls slippery, creating a risk of accidents.

Chlorine traditional process

Chlorine-based pool treatment product : A traditional and economical disinfection method. Chlorine tablets are placed in the skimmer or the return inlet dispenser. These pool chlorine tablets slowly dissolve in the pool water, generating hypochlorous acid. With this treatment, the chlorine level in the pool should be checked daily using chlorine/pH/bromine testers. In the event of a significant chlorination deficiency, you can quickly correct it by using shock chlorine, which comes in powder form and is added directly to the pool water to rapidly raise the chlorine level. This is generally done at the beginning of the season, after intensive pool use, or in the event of high temperatures and storms. Using a chlorine stabilizer will help limit this loss. Be careful not to add too much chlorine stabilizer, as this will make your pool "over-stabilized," which is not the desired outcome.

Concentrated bleach or pool chlorine? What's the difference?

It would be easy to ask why buy a specific pool chlorine product instead of bleach directly. Simply because a pool-specific product contains a chlorine stabilizer , allowing for extended shelf life, whereas concentrated bleach can quickly lose its effectiveness. It also contains a limescale stabilizer with anti-limescale and anti-corrosion agents for extended shelf life, preventing limescale buildup in the pipes and suction strainers of the dosing system.
Furthermore, if you are equipped with a diatomaceous earth filter, you must pay attention to the product's compatibility.

Chlorine concentration: 48° or 36° CHL?

There are two types of chlorine concentration in swimming pool products.
A formulation reserved for domestic use with a concentration of 36°CHL corresponding to 9.6% active chlorine and a formulation exclusively reserved for professional use with a concentration of 48°CHL corresponding to 12.6% active chlorine.
Of course there is a price difference between these two formulas and generally you can even find even lower concentrations on the market... It is therefore essential to know what you are talking about and above all to compare identical concentrations.
Chlorine 48°CHL is reserved for professional use (swimming pools, communities, campsites, hotels, spas, etc.) and you will not find it for sale to the general public.

Automatic chlorine and pH dosing

Chlorine can also be supplied in liquid form. In this case, the chlorine is injected using a dosing pump, such as a peristaltic pump, which has one pump for the chlorine and another for pH adjustment. Alternatively , liquid pH reducer is used, typically in 25 or 30-liter containers, which are placed under the chlorine/pH dosing unit.

Probes placed in the circulation system allow for the measurement of chlorine and pH concentrations.
In this case, manually checking the chlorine and pH levels is generally unnecessary if your dosing system and especially your probes are working correctly. This is often the case, but to avoid any unpleasant surprises (a machine is still just a machine), periodic checks will allow you to ensure the proper functioning of the chlorine/pH doser and its associated probes.

Salt electrolysis

Salt electrolysis pool product : This process generates sodium hypochlorite, rich in active chlorine, through the simple electrolysis of slightly salted pool water. The device must be installed on the return line as close as possible to the pool in the equipment room to avoid damaging other equipment. It is a powerful disinfectant.

Active oxygen and bromine

Active oxygen-based pool product : Active oxygen is odorless, in liquid or solid form, it is a disinfectant and algaecide. It makes the water soft and pleasant.

Bromine-based pool product : This halogen, a natural disinfectant, is extracted from salt springs. Bromine is remarkably effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and for oxidizing impurities present in pool water. Bromine is effective thanks to its high-performance bactericidal power and its ability to regenerate. This process, which requires a dosing device, forms disinfectant hypobromous acid upon contact with water. Bromine is gentle on skin and eyes and prevents unpleasant odors. Bromine remains effective at high temperatures.
