PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a thermoplastic polymer, made 100% from fossil resources (petroleum). It is not compostable.
Silicone, on the other hand, is made from silicon (mineral extracted from sand and rock). It is abundant in nature.
It is widely used in medicine, and has been widely analyzed to be compatible with human health. It is safe and non-toxic to humans even when implanted in the body. It is also non-toxic to animals and micro-organisms.
It is not, strictly speaking, biodegradable, but its particles degrade in air or in water. Its degradation does not generate greenhouse gases.
Carbon dioxide could be released if burned, but in a much lower quantity than burning plastic.
It is technically recyclable although today it is not part of the sorting offered to households.
Silicone extraction has a reduced environmental impact. It is abundant, and does not require exploitation in sensitive areas.
