The wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is compulsory according to the decree of May 27, 1987.
Three categories of PPE are defined in declination of 3 risk categories
Understanding the risks
Disposable coveralls Category I => simple design => Minor risk
Disposable coverall Category II => intermediate design => Medium / Intermediate risk
Disposable coverall Category III => complex design => Major risk / High or even fatal
The combination classified in category III (3) covers fatal risks or irreversible damage.
Example on asbestos removal operations, equipment for the fight against infectious diseases such as viruses.
Category III combinations against major risks Personal protective equipment is worn by an individual to protect him from one or more external risks. Assessment of phenomena
dangerous occurs through their frequency and severity. Personal Protective Equipment is intended to protect exposed persons from danger.
The choice of the appropriate PPE results from the risk analysis linked to exposure to hazards.
Understanding the type of risk
Risk type 6 EN 13034:
Limited protection of disposable coveralls against liquid chemicals. Equipment ensuring complete or partial protection of the user against liquid chemicals in the form of a light spray (liquid aerosols, sprays) or sprayed (at low pressure) not very dangerous.
Protective clothing against liquid chemicals - Requirements for chemical protective clothing providing
limited protection against liquid chemicals (Type 6 and Type PB (6) equipment).
Risk type 5 EN 13982-1:
Protection against solid chemicals in the form of an aerosol of solid particles. Equipment ensuring complete protection of the user against solid chemicals in the form of low concentration aerosols.
Protective clothing to be used against solid particles
- Part 1 :
performance requirements for chemical protective clothing providing whole-body protection
against airborne solid particles (
type 5 clothing).
Risk type 4 EN 14605:
Protection against liquid chemicals. Equipment ensuring complete or partial protection of the user against liquid chemicals
in the form of a spray .
Protective clothing against
liquid chemicals - Performance requirements for clothing with spray-tight connections
(Type 4) , including articles of clothing protecting only certain parts of the body (Type PB (4)).
Risk type 3 EN 14605:
Protection against
liquid chemicals . Equipment ensuring complete or partial protection of the user against liquid chemicals
in the form of a jet (violent projection of liquid chemical).
Clothing for protection against liquid chemicals - Performance requirements for clothing with liquid-tight fasteners
(Type 3) , including articles of clothing protecting only certain parts of the body
(Type PB (3)).
Disposable coveralls, type 2 risk EN 943-1
Protection limited to gases. Equipment ensuring complete or partial protection of the user against gases.
Disposable coveralls, type 1 risk EN 943-1 EN 9643-2:
Gas tight protection. Equipment ensuring complete protection of the user against gases.
Complementary standards:
EN 1149-5: Electrostatic protection when properly earthed.
EN 1073-2: Protection against radioactive particles.
EN 14126: Protection against infectious agents. Protection against infectious agents must comply with standard EN 14126, by providing levels of requirements concerning dry, liquid, contact or airborne bacterial contamination. Compliance with this standard makes it possible to claim the B index.
